3Newspaper - Banffshire Journal.
"THE LATE MR WILLIAM BARTLET, BANFF

We regret to report the death of one of the oldest and certainly one of the most respected, citizens of Banff - namely, Mr William Bartlet, who died at his residence. in Banff on Saturday night at the mature age of 77 years. Mr Bartlett has been connected with Banff for upwards of 60 years, and for the last 50 years or so he has been a constant resident in the burgh. He carried on a large business both as a shipowner and in other capacities and his transactions were ever marked by the highest integrity and honour, and no name was held in higher esteem in the district than that of the gentleman who died on Saturday. So long as he was able to move about, he took an active part in every institution tending to promote the welfare and prosperity of the place. Mr Bartlett was born in 1788 at Afforsk in the parish of Gamrie. He attended the parish school there under the tuition of Mr Tough, until the year 1800, when he came to Banff Academy. After attending the Academy for some time under the late Mr Cruikshank, he served a seven-year apprenticeship to his friends and relations Messrs John Chalmers and Co., merchants in Banff - one of whom, it is well known, was the founder of Chalmers' Hospital. The Messrs Chalmers' were also the principal partners in the Banff Brewery, with which Mr Bartlet was afterwards intimately connected. Previous to this, however, in 1809, he left Banff for London, where he was principal clerk to Messrs G Milne and Co, merchants, and underwent an excellent training to business habits. On returning to Banff in 1813, he was appointed manager of the brewery, and (having also acquired an interest in the business) continued in that capacity until some years ago, when, although he had always enjoyed good health, the infirmities of age at length obliged him to retire from the more active duties of life. Of late years, the brewery has been under the able management of his nephew, Mr William Paterson, junior, son of Mr Paterson, merchant and shipowner. Mr Bartlett, we have said, was also an extensive shipowner . He carried on business in that line for 36 years, and in this, as well as in his other business relations, he was very successful. He carried on the Banff Tannery for a number of years; and altogether, must have led a very active life. In his day, too, he took his share in the public business of the town. He was for some time on the Harbour Trust, as well as in the Police Commission; and he was for some time in the Town Council - from 1842-1844. He was Kirk Treasurer for many years; and for a considerable number of years he was manager of the Banff Seamen's Fund. For upwards of 20 years, he was managing director of the Banff Savings Bank, and a considerable sum of money which fell to him for his trouble, he generously handed over to the trustees of Pirie's(?) School, for the benefit of that institution. His valuable services, however, to the Savings Bank were not to be allowed to go unrewarded - and when retiring from the management at the time the bank came under the Government security, he was presented with two handsome silver goblets. The generous act to which reference has just been made was characteristic of the man. Generous and open hearted, he was extremely kind to the poor, and his multiplied and daily private charities, known only to himself and the recipients, were as beautiful as they were on unostentatious."
Date of publication is unknown, but was March 18th to 24th, 1866.
