3Newspaper - The Times, page 6; column C, 25 Aug 1911.
"Lovers' Suicide - Shortly after 1 o'clock yesterday morning a young couple were observed to throw themselves into the Thames opposite the Tate Gallery. A sheet of writing paper bearing the following words was found on the Embankment wall:- "A young man, Gaywood street SE, and a young woman jumped into the Thames at this spot". About 4 hours later the receding tide left the two bodies on the foreshore off Grovesnor Wharf, Pimlico. The man's left hand was tied to the woman's right hand by a handkerchief fastened at the wrists. The man was identified as George Henry Cripps, aged 20, a bootmaker, of Gaywood street, London road SE, and the woman as Elizabeth Morgan, aged 18, lately living with her parents in Peabody buildings, Southwark. The young couple it appears, had been courting for two years. Cripps was out of work, and his unemployment is supposed to have led to the crime."

4Newspaper - The Times, page 8; column G, 28 Aug 1911.
"Lovers' Suicide in the Thames - In the Westmisnter Coroner's Court on Saturday Mr. R. Henslowe Wellington held an inquest on the bodies of James Edward Cripps, 20, boot repairer, of Gaywood Street, Southwark, and Elizabeth Morgan, 18 of Peabody buildings, Southwark Street. Cripps and Morgan were found drowned in the Thames, and before throwing themselves into the river from the Grosvenor Road Embankment they fastened themselves together with a handkerchief tied at the wrists. The father of Cripps stated that he received a letter by post. Some of the writing was, he said, his son's, and some was not. It contained the following passage:- "As I had no work, and could see no prospects before me, I have decided to end it all. Lizzie's father told me tonight (Wed.) that we should have to part, as her mother did not like to see us going together." Benjamin Lewis Morgan, an engineer's labourer, said he knew his daughter was "keeping company" with Cripps. On Thursday morning his wife received a letter from his daughter, in the course of which she wrote:- As you would not let Jem and I be together we thought we would put an end to it all. Don't blame Jem, as I wanted to get out of the way....You will find us near Vauxhall Bridge, Thames." The father added that the girl had told the witness's wife that she was afraid of Crips, who, she said, dogged her footsteps. The jury returnd a verdict that both Cripps and Morgan "Committed suicide during temporary insanity"."
