MR AND MRS CHARLES CLEAVER
More than 100 relatives from all parts of the Dominion attended the sixty-fifth anniversary, last Friday of the marriage of Mr and Mrs Charles Cleaver, of Normanby, Taranaki, the platinum wedding being marked by a celebration in the Normanby Town Hall.
Mr and Mrs Cleaver, who were married at Woodend on April 24, 1871, were both early settlers of Canterbury. Mr Cleaver is the son of Mr H. Cleaver, a pioneer who came to New Zealand in 1850. He was three months old when his parents left his birthplace in Warwick County, England, for the Dominion. The voyage to New Zealand was made in the sailing ship Cressy, one of the First Four Ships dispatched by the Plymouth company to New Zealand to establish a settlement at Christchurch. Alter three months the Cressy berthed at Port Lyttelton. Each of these four ships carried 350 passengers, and of these, only four are living to-day. Mr Cleaver is one of the two passengers of the Cressy still alive. Mr Cleaver first lived in a raupo thatched dug-out on the Port Hills, his father later taking his family to Kaiapoi, where they remained for 11 years. In 1871 Mr Cleaver married Miss Frances Murfitt, daughter of the late Mr John Murfitt, who brought his family to the colonies from Cambridgeshire in the Strath Helen in 1885. Mr and Mrs Cleaver settled on a 500 acre section near Christchurch, and spent 27 years in the district. About 38 years ago they moved to Hawera, where they farmed until about 22 years ago, when they retired to live at Normanby. Mr and Mrs Cleaver, who are 86 and 83 years of age respectively, had 14 children, 12 of whom are living to-day. They have 62 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Of 99 descendants, only two sons and three grandchildren are dead."
