"DEATH OF MR J. S. BENYON OF KUMARA.
It is with deep regret tbat we have to record tbe death of still another of the rapidly diminishing band of old pioneers in the person of James Stephen Benyon, which sad event took place at Kumara on Sunday morning at 9 o'clock. Mr Benyon had been in failing health for some time, but only took to bed a couple of days before the end came. Deceased was the youngest son of tbe late Mr Stephen Benyon, of Landport, Portsmouth; England, a painter in Heraldry, He was born in 1836, and educated at Mesney's Academy, and was a decorator by profession. Tbe goldfields attracting him, he went to Victoria in 1852. Mr Benyon followed goldmining with varying success, working at intervals at his trade. He was at Bendigo, Forest Creek, and at Balarat during the Eureka riots. Coming to New Zealand in 1869, he settled for many years at Okarito, where he bought the stock and store of Messrs Mace and Canavan. He was secretary of tbe Okarito Road Board for five years and eventually went to Kumara in 1885. Shortly after his arrival he entered local politics, becoming a member of tbe Borough Conucil. He filled the Mayoral chair from 1889 to 1894. Mr Benyon became editor aud manager of tbe "Kumara Times" and held that position until December, 1905, when he retired. Going to the North Island, be remained there until a few months ago, when be returned to the Coast and lived with his daughter, Mrs Murchie, until the end. Besides being a member of the Kuirara Borough Council, deceased occupied a seat on the Hospital Trustees, School Committee, Westland Charitable Aid Board, and Westland Education Board for some years. Deceased was very popular and highly respected, as shown by the confidence the people reposed in him from time to time in local elections, he having headed the poll by a large majority at the 1ast two Borough elections. Deceased leaves a widow and grown-up family of three sons and two daughters to whom the sympathy of tbe whole district is extended."

James Stephen BENYON

1Newspaper - Grey River Argus, Page 2; Column 4, 7 Aug 1905.
"The death of poor Jim, the third son of Mr and Mrs J. S. Benyon, which took place at Auckland at 2 30 a.m. on Friday, has cast quite a gloom over the district, where he was well known and highly respected as one of nature's young gentlemen. We all have our troubles, but Mr and Mrs Benyon have had more than their share, this being the secoad son they have lost, during the past five years. Poor Jim was well known in Greymouth, he having managed Johnson's Grey Valley Butchery. We extend to the bereaved family and parents our deep felt sympathy for this sad and sudden bereavement. The unfortunate young man was buried at Auckland, from his sister's (Mrs Saddler) residence."

2Newspaper - Grey River Argus, Page 3; Kumara Notes, 2 Aug 1905.
"The many friends of Mr James Benyon, son of Mr J. S. Benyon, of Kumara, will regret lo learn that he is lying dangerously ill at his sister's residence, Auckland, with hemorrhage of the bowels, the result of a kick or strain while playing a game of football recently. Jimmy was a well known favourite not only here but also in Greymouth and Hokitika. His mother, Mrs Benyon, left in the Wainul, en route for Auckland, last night, and I am sure the best wishes of all those who know him is expressed for his speedy recovery."
