"FATAL SHOOTING ACCIDENT.
THE INQUEST
The inquest upon the body of Oswald Suisted Lord Winstanley, who Was acdidentally shot by his brother Norman, took plaoe on Saturday afternoon in the Council Chamber. In the absence of Mr Allen, the Coroner (who was engaged in the Supreme Court), Mr J. E..Hodson, J.P officiated as Acting-Coroner. The following constituted the jury John Smith, Thomas Watson, W. T. Sherwood, A. Chuck, E.D. Jones, and P. Byron. Mr Watson was chosen foreman. Sergeant White conducted the enquiry on behalf of the police.
Dr Cleghorn deposed that when he was called inat 8.30 on Saturday morning the boy was quite dead- There was a hole in the left eyebrow, and another on the right side of the head, the brain protruding. The wound was larger than that which would have been inflicted by a bullet. The gun must have been fired off close to the deceased.
Mrs Winstanley, mother of the deceased, said she heard the report of a gun shortly after 8 o'clock, and her boy, Norman, rushed into her room with a carbine in his hand, exclaiming that he had shot Oswald,
Norman Winstanley gave his account of the occurrence. He was going through drill before his brother, who was reading in bed, and was shewing how to "prepare for Cavalry" on his knees, when the carbine went off and shot his brother. Witness had put a piece of lead in it, as well as a blank cartridge. Both he and his brother ware laughing at the time of the occurrence. The carbine was used by witness at drill as a cadet. He put the carbine at half- cock so as to prevent its going off, but he could not say what made it go off as it did. William Fergusson, residing next door to Mrs. Winstanley, stated he was called into the house shortly after 8 o'clock by the boy Norman, who ran into the garden screaming. The boy Oswald was bleeding from the head, and was apparently alive thongh insensible. Norman went off for Dr Cleghorn. J. F. Lucas, Captain of the Cadets, of which Norman was a member, stated that they had been firing off blank cartridges the previous day. The cartridges had been served out for Wednesday's review, but were not used, and he gave them to the boys to fire off. The boys had no pouches, and therefore he collected from them any cartridges that were over after the firing. Any cartridge taken away from the ground was taken without the knowledge of witness.
After a brief retirement, the jury found that the deceased was accidentally shot by his brother."

John Sidney Winstanley, of Nelson, petitioned for a divorce from his wife, Annie Eliza Winstanley, of Welington, on the ground of desertion. Respondent counter-petitiontd for a divorce on the same ground. Mr C.R. Fell appeared for the petitioner, and Mr T.M. Wilford for the respondent.
Mr Wilford said that the petitioner had abandoned his suit on the ground that it could not he supported, and he proposed to proceed with the counterclaim.
In evidence Annie Eliza Winstanley stated that she was married, at Wellington in 1887, and there were six children, two of whom were under the age of 16 years. She lived in Nelson with her husband until October, 1911, and on October 27th of that year left for Wellington. Six months prior to that date he left her. While she had been in Wellington she had supported herself by keeping boarders without any assistance from him. Eighteen months afterwards he asked her to come back to him, and she came to Nelson, but no reconciliation took place. Charles Henry Winstanley, son of the respondent, also gave evidence. A decree nisi was granted, to be made absolute after three months. His Honour made an interim order for the custody of the two youngest children, and the payment of 35s per week alimony until tho decree is made absolute.
Mr Wilford intimated that the petitioner had paid all costs, including the costs as between solicitor and client, and, therefore no order was asked for."
